learn to use a pattern!

2010 January 18
by fabrika

In the first installment of this class, we will be making Amy Butler’s “the Liverpool” shirt/tunic/dress.

You will learn to read and understand a garment pattern and come out of the class with a beautiful garment- of your choice- made to fit you or a loved one!

We will spend the first hour of the first session doing a review on the machine.  From there, we will begin looking at the pattern instructions and discussing some of the terminology.  Once everyone has selected the cut and size of the garment, we’ll begin cutting out the fabric (which will be purchased here at the start of class).  Now we will begin following the pattern step by step to execute a professionally made top.

After completion of the garment, we will do a basic fitting and make alterations as needed (time permitting).

 2- 3.5 hour sessions.
$180/person—minimum of 2 people per class, maximum of 4 people.

Materials are not included.  You will be able to select from our fabrics at a 10% discount.  The amount of fabric will depend on the size and style of the garment you choose to make.  You will also be required to purchase the pattern for the class, as each person will be cutting a different size/style.  You can keep this pattern and alter it in the future to make a new and exciting look!

Some sewing experience required.

First class dates: Mon, Feb 8 & Tues, Feb 9 from 5:30-9pm.

book review . . . by Kate Wells of Katydidcrafts

Pretty Little Patchwork

This book is a great entry for beginner sewers into patchwork.  Patchwork is done by sewing together different fabric scraps into a larger design.  While most people associate patchwork with quilts, this book offers a number of small, creative projects that provide an easy way to practice piecing as an introduction to a larger project like a quilt.  It also showcases the range of applications for patchwork.  The 32 projects in the book are created by a group of designers and would appeal to beginner to intermediate sewers.   Several of the projects are particularly charming – like the “Clutch Me Tightly” purse or the lavender-filled “Spa Sachets”.  However, some of the others are not particularly well-designed and might be disappointing to readers looking for new ideas.  Instructions and materials lists are clear and easy to understand and the overview provides good  tips for basic sewing and techniques.  Overall, this is a great book for folks wanting to practice patchwork or accomplished quilters who might be looking for new small projects.
